Art-oberfest

The Humboldt Area Arts Council is holding Art-oberfest again this year with a full schedule of art classes scheduled for October.

“Fall Pumpkins with fresh flowers” will be held on Oct. 10 at the Humboldt Art Center from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.

Stacy Wempen will be offering a class where participants will be decorating fresh pumpkins and filling them with fresh assorted fall flowers and succulents.

“It’s fun to see the different design styles come to life,” Stacy Wempen said.

Stacy and her husband, Derek, own and operate Wempen’s Garden Center. They offer a full service garden center, landscape design and installation, annuals, trees, shrubs, perennials, lawn care, and a flower shop engaging in weddings, funerals and every day occasions.

From the flower shop side of things they like to share the experience of creating and designing different arrangements for the various seasons or holidays. They host workshops throughout the year. Some are more geared to children and others for adults.

Some of the workshops they host are around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. They offer a spring workshop in the greenhouses where people can bring their planters out, fill them with the flowers they like best, and then leave them in the greenhouse until May 15 and they take care of them until then.

“Then they are full and beautiful as soon as you put them out or have us deliver them,” Stacy said.

They also hold workshops around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“For winter, the same pots you filled with annuals then can be brought out and we will help you create a winter look with branches, evergreen and berries,” Stacy said.

Wempen’s Garden Center is located one mile north of Highway 3 on County K Road.

The night of Oct. 12 will be Kids’ Fall Arts n Crafts Night from 2:30-4 p.m. The event is free. It is for ages five on up, although under five can participate with a parent. To sign up, call Witz End at (515) 890-1228.

“Sponge and Rag” by Susan Witzel will be Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 7-9:30 p.m. To sign up, contact Susan at (515) 890-0617.

A Photo Show is set for Oct. 27 from 5-7:30 p.m. Limit to two framed photos no smaller than five by seven.

Participants can drop them off at Witz End, O’Hair or First State Bank. There will be two categories, non-professional and professional.
